Pakistan’s 5G Launch Delayed Due to Spectrum Auction Challenges

Pakistani consumers may have to wait a little longer to experience 5G technology, as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has faced challenges in the auction of the 5G spectrum.

During a Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom meeting on Thursday, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan, PTA officials briefed members on the issues surrounding the 5G auction policy. It was explained that 5G requires a larger spectrum, but several obstacles have emerged in the process.

The committee was informed that the government of Pakistan needs to issue a policy directive for the new spectrum, and a trial was permitted back in 2017. Officials also shared that an advisory committee for 5G has been established, and PTA hired a consultant in November to provide a report on the matter.

Regarding Ufone’s merger with Telenor, PTA officials revealed that the case is currently being reviewed by the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP). The 5G spectrum decision will be made keeping in mind 3 or 4 market players.

IT Ministry officials mentioned that not all consumers will immediately transition to 5G once it is launched. They further explained that 5G’s spectrum would also enhance the speeds of 3G and 4G networks. Currently, Pakistan has three categories of bands available for 5G.

**Universal Service Fund (USF) Update**

In the meeting, officials also briefed the committee on the projects executed by the Universal Service Fund (USF) over the last three years. The USF’s mandate is to provide telecom services to rural and remote areas. It was shared that 63 projects have been completed in various rural areas, bringing telecom services to several villages across the country.

**Motorway Internet Services Issue**

Senator Palwasha Khan raised concerns regarding the interruption of internet services on the motorway. PTA officials assured the committee that they are actively addressing the issue and working to resolve it.

The meeting was attended by Senators Dr. Afanullah Khan, Anusha Rahman Ahmed Khan, Dr. Humayun Mhemmand, Saifullah Sarwar Khan Niazi, Gurdip Singh, IT Secretary Zarar Khan, and PTA Chairman Major General (R) Hafeez-ur-Rehman, among other senior officials.
