Pakistan to Suspend Internet and Mobile Services Ahead of PTI’s November 24 Protest

Islamabad:In light of the upcoming Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest on November 24 in Islamabad, the government has decided to suspend internet and mobile services in various regions, including Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and parts of Punjab.

According to sources, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will activate a firewall on mobile internet services from November 22. This firewall will result in slower internet speeds and will prevent the downloading of videos and audio files on social media apps. Furthermore, depending on the situation, the government may decide to suspend internet and mobile services entirely at specific locations during the protest.

VPN Usage and New Guidelines

In response to the potential disruption of internet services, the PTA also held a consultative meeting at its headquarters to discuss the registration and facilitation process for Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). The meeting focused on ensuring uninterrupted internet access for businesses and key sectors.

Representatives from several key stakeholders attended the session, including the CEO of the Pakistan Software Export Board, the Chairman of the Pakistan Software Houses Association, the CEO of the Pakistan Freelancers Association, and officials from the Ministry of IT and Telecom, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the State Bank of Pakistan. The meeting emphasized the importance of secure and continuous internet access, especially for software houses, BPO firms, banks, embassies, and freelancers.

The PTA reiterated its commitment to facilitating registered VPN users and ensuring data security. It was stressed that registered VPNs would be prioritized to ensure smooth internet connectivity for these crucial sectors.

Concerns Over VPN Registration Process

During the meeting, Pasha (Pakistan Software Houses Association) praised PTA’s facilitation efforts but emphasized the need for more time and consultation regarding the registration of VPNs. They urged PTA to avoid causing disruptions by providing adequate time for businesses to register their VPNs and to address concerns about unregistered VPNs.

As the situation develops, the government’s efforts to control internet access and regulate VPN usage reflect its concerns over maintaining order during the PTI protest and preventing any potential disruptions in communication channels. The authorities have made it clear that they are committed to balancing security measures with the need for uninterrupted services for businesses and critical sectors.
