Pakistan Faces Tougher Scrutiny Under Trump’s New Cabinet, Say Experts

Washington:Newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump’s cabinet picks have raised concerns in Pakistan, as several key figures with strong pro-India and anti-Pakistan views are set to take on critical roles in his administration. The appointments, including the new Secretary of State, Defense Secretary, National Security Advisor, and CIA Director, suggest a shift in U.S. foreign policy that may put Pakistan under greater scrutiny.

Among the most prominent cabinet selections is Senator Marco Rubio, nominated as Secretary of State. Rubio, who has been a vocal critic of Pakistan in the past, introduced legislation accusing Pakistan of harboring terrorists and calling for the suspension of military aid to the country. His stance on Pakistan has been consistent, with his support for India’s security interests in the region.

Another key appointment is Mike Waltz, the new National Security Advisor, who has also been outspoken in demanding that Pakistan take stronger action against cross-border terrorism. Waltz has previously criticized Pakistan for not doing enough to combat terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan.

The new CIA Director, John Ratcliffe, further solidifies this stance, with some experts interpreting his appointment as signaling that Pakistan will not be a priority in the new administration’s foreign policy agenda. The U.S. intelligence community has long been critical of Pakistan’s alleged ties to terrorism, and Ratcliffe’s nomination is seen as reinforcing this view.

Additionally, the new Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, has also made headlines for accusing Pakistan of providing sanctuary to terrorists, including Osama bin Laden, and for its role in alleged cross-border infiltrations into India.

Indian media have reported that these appointments have stirred unease within Pakistan’s political and military circles. Sources suggest that Pakistan’s leadership is now reevaluating its approach to the U.S. and preparing new strategies to navigate the potentially strained relationship with the incoming Trump administration.

With these appointments, it appears that the Trump administration will continue to prioritize strengthening ties with India, while placing increasing pressure on Pakistan to address longstanding concerns about terrorism and regional security. Pakistan’s policy makers are reportedly engaged in internal discussions to adapt to this evolving diplomatic landscape.
