OpenAI Launches Voice-Based Version of ChatGPT, Expanding Access to AI Conversations

Islamabad:OpenAI has introduced an exciting new voice-based version of its ChatGPT service, allowing users to interact with the AI chatbot through voice, directly from their phones. This new feature offers a seamless way for users to engage with AI, whether through a phone call or by messaging a number on WhatsApp, without the need to download an app or have high-speed internet access.

As part of this new service, users are given 15 minutes of free calling time each month, enabling them to ask questions and receive answers just like they would on the regular text-based version of ChatGPT. However, while the voice responses are functional, they are not as personalized as those offered on the app. The voice-based feature is part of OpenAI’s ongoing campaign, “12 Days of OpenAI,” launched in December 2024.

Despite the convenience and novelty of this feature, OpenAI has acknowledged some concerns regarding the voice technology, especially questions around whether it will replicate human-like voices. To address these concerns, the company has provided a disclaimer, urging users to agree to specific terms before interacting with the voice assistant. These terms outline that OpenAI may record or store voice data as part of the service.

This development comes amidst growing competition from major tech players such as Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Elon Musk’s X.AI. However, OpenAI is continuing to push ahead with innovations like the voice feature to expand its reach and user base.

The company is also focused on its long-term financial goals. In October, OpenAI raised a record $6.6 billion in funding, which pushed its valuation to $157 billion. When asked about its future profits, the ChatGPT bot optimistically responded, confirming OpenAI’s plans to achieve profitability in the near future.

This new voice-enabled feature marks a significant step in making AI more accessible and user-friendly, with OpenAI continuing to expand its offerings and innovate in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
