Nutrient Deficiencies Linked to Leg Issues
Islamabad: A British physician has highlighted that deficiencies in vitamin B12 or iron may lead to or exacerbate Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). RLS is a neurological condition characterized by an uncomfortable urge to move the legs, often accompanied by unpleasant sensations.
Dr. Asif Ahmed, based in the UK, discussed the condition on his TikTok account, explaining its symptoms can affect individuals of any age. He noted that RLS symptoms can range from mild irritation to depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.
Dr. Ahmed emphasized that diagnosing RLS can be complex but outlined key criteria for assessment:
An uncontrollable urge to move the legs, often linked to uncomfortable sensations such as tingling.
Symptoms tend to worsen during periods of rest.
Movement or walking may provide partial or complete relief.
Symptoms are typically more severe at night.
No other underlying cause is identifiable through blood tests or examinations.
While many cases have no clear origin, some may be associated with deficiencies in essential nutrients and vitamins. Dr. Ahmed pointed out that experts recognize factors that can trigger or worsen the condition, including iron or vitamin B12 deficiencies, pregnancy, and certain medications.
