NIH: Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Has Been Present in Pakistan for Over Two Decades
Islamabad:The National Institute of Health (NIH) has confirmed that the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), which is currently spreading in China, has been present in Pakistan for more than 20 years. According to the NIH, HMPV was first reported in Pakistan in 2001, and in 2015, 21 cases were reported at PIMS in Islamabad.
NIH officials stated that the World Health Organization (WHO) has yet to issue any advisory regarding HMPV, and a meeting of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) will be held on Tuesday to discuss the situation in China.
Health authorities in Pakistan have started closely monitoring the outbreak of HMPV in China. At present, seasonal influenza, especially Influenza A and B, is circulating in Pakistan, with numerous cases being reported. Medical experts have also noted that HMPV cases are frequently observed during this time.
### **What is Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)?**
HMPV is a respiratory virus that primarily affects children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. It often presents with symptoms similar to the common cold or flu, including fever, cough, and nasal congestion. In some cases, it can lead to serious health risks, particularly in vulnerable individuals.
### **Symptoms of HMPV**
The symptoms of HMPV are similar to those of flu or cold viruses and may include:
– Fever
– Cough
– Nasal congestion
– Shortness of breath
– Increased risk of respiratory illnesses
### **HMPV Outbreak in China**
A new virus, HMPV, similar to COVID-19, is rapidly spreading in China, five years after the COVID pandemic. Reports indicate that individuals infected with HMPV are showing COVID-like symptoms such as runny nose, fever, and cough, along with an increase in respiratory diseases.
Foreign media and social media posts, as well as videos from China, have shown hospitals overwhelmed with patients. There have been unverified claims of a state of emergency in the country, with some reports suggesting the simultaneous spread of Influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma Pneumonia, and COVID-19. There are also claims that hospitals are full and that many lives have been lost due to these infections.
China’s Disease Control Authority has announced a pilot monitoring system for the unknown strain of pneumonia. In response to the rise in respiratory illnesses during the winter season, authorities are preparing to implement new protocols to deal with unknown pathogens.
### **Precautionary Measures**
To prevent the spread of HMPV and similar viruses, health officials recommend the following:
– Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water.
– Regularly disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
– Avoid close contact with infected individuals.
– Wear a mask in crowded places for added protection.
– Stay updated on vaccines available for new diseases.
– Maintain a healthy diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants to strengthen the immune system.
– Avoid smoking, as it damages the respiratory system and increases the risk of infections.
– Ensure proper hydration for overall health and recovery.
Understanding viruses like HMPV and following these preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of infection and its spread.
