New Zealand Defeats Pakistan by 60 Runs in ICC Champions Trophy Opener

In the opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy, New Zealand defeated host Pakistan by 60 runs. After electing to bat first, New Zealand posted a challenging total of 321 runs, which Pakistan failed to chase down.

Following Pakistan’s defeat, social media users were quick to criticize the national cricket team. Ahmed Waraich pointed out that New Zealand had beaten Pakistan three times in just 11 days on Pakistani grounds, with previous victories in Lahore and Karachi. He humorously noted that Pakistan’s commitment to the game was remarkable.

One user shared a video highlighting Pakistan’s inconsistent performance, mentioning that when Pakistan’s bowling is strong, the batting falters, and when the batting is solid, the fielding suffers. The user labeled this as a recurring issue for the team.

Journalist Asad Ali Toor commented that Pakistan had done justice to its hosting duties, losing to New Zealand, and sarcastically added that his positive reporting was in line with the newly introduced PICA Act.

Mughees Ali described the disappointing start to the Champions Trophy, with Pakistan’s defeat to New Zealand. He speculated that the upcoming India vs. Pakistan match could now be a do-or-die affair for both teams.

Hira Khan raised the question: *”Who do you think is responsible for Pakistan’s loss?”*

Shazia, another user, jokingly suggested that instead of releasing Imran Khan, Pakistan’s cricket team should be arrested.

One Twitter user shared a meme stating, *”The tournament is over before it even started.”*

Former Pakistani cricketer Basit Ali questioned whether Babar Azam was playing for himself or for Pakistan, criticizing his performance and asking if Babar was bigger than the team.

Looking ahead, Pakistan will face their traditional rivals India in their second Champions Trophy match on February 23 in Dubai, a match that now holds even more significance for both teams after this loss.
