NEPRA Reports 140 Fatal Accidents in Power Distribution Areas in 2023-24
Islamabad:The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has released data on fatalities among citizens and employees of power distribution companies for the fiscal year 2023-24. According to the report, the highest number of fatalities occurred in the service area of *K-Electric*, the power distribution company serving Karachi. A total of 140 fatal accidents were reported in areas under the jurisdiction of various electricity distribution companies in the country.
The NEPRA report states that *K-Electric*’s service area accounted for the highest number of fatalities, with 34 deaths. Of these, 32 were civilians, and 2 were employees of the company.
The report further revealed that in the previous fiscal year, *Iesco* (Islamabad Electric Supply Company) reported 26 fatalities, *Pesco* (Peshawar Electric Supply Company) recorded 20 deaths, and *Lesco* (Lahore Electric Supply Company) had 18 fatalities. Other areas such as *Gepco* (Gujranwala Electric Power Company) reported 9 fatalities, while *Hesco* (Hyderabad Electric Supply Company), *Kesco* (Kohat Electric Supply Company), and *Fesco* (Faisalabad Electric Supply Company) had 7, 9, and 7 deaths respectively.
Additionally, *Sepco* (Sukkur Electric Power Company) recorded 5 fatalities, while *Mepco* (Multan Electric Power Company) reported 3 deaths.
The NEPRA report emphasized the failure of power companies to meet safety standards and issued a stern warning. It urged electricity distribution companies to strictly adhere to safety protocols to prevent such tragic incidents in the future. The regulatory body stressed the need for immediate action to improve safety measures and prevent loss of life in the coming years.
