Islamabad: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has granted approval for the privatization of distribution companies (DISCOs). The decision was made during a meeting of the NEPRA Board chaired by Federal Minister for Investment Board, Communications, and Energy, Abdul Aleem Khan. The meeting also decided to appoint a financial advisor alongside approving the privatization of DISCOs. Legal formalities for privatization are expected to be completed by 2025, with the initial phase involving privatization of three DISCOs.
Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan emphasized the seriousness of privatization for enhancing transparency and expediting operations related to power distribution. He highlighted the crucial role of efficient privatization in strengthening the national economy and its recovery. The transformation of public sector institutions into efficient entities is seen as pivotal in ensuring benefits for the privatized institutions. NEPRA aims to achieve all privatization objectives promptly, with final approval to be granted by the Cabinet Committee on Privatization (CCoP).
