NEPRA Criticizes K-Electric’s Performance Amid Karachi Power Crisis

Islamabad:The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has strongly criticized K-Electric’s performance, holding the company accountable for the ongoing power crisis in Karachi.
During a public hearing, residents, industrialists, and traders from Karachi expressed their frustration with K-Electric’s poor performance. They accused the utility company of undermining the government’s winter relief package and failing to provide reliable electricity to industrial and commercial areas.
At one point, the suggestion to revoke K-Electric’s generation license was also discussed. Participants argued that K-Electric’s continued load shedding is sabotaging the federal government’s efforts to boost business production and commercial activities. As a result, economic growth has been hindered.
NEPRA also highlighted that K-Electric is overly dependent on the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) for 67% of its electricity supply.
Maqsood Anwar, a member of NEPRA from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, proposed the cancellation of K-Electric’s generation license, further intensifying the scrutiny of the company’s operations.
