Nawaz Sharif Takes on Role as Patron-in-Chief of Lahore Heritage Revival Authority

Lahore, Pakistan:Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has taken on a new role as the Patron-in-Chief of the newly established Lahore Heritage Revival Authority (LAHR), which aims to restore and preserve the city’s ancient buildings and cultural heritage. The announcement came after a special meeting held on Sunday, chaired by Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
Though Nawaz Sharif is not currently in power, with his party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), holding power in both the federal and provincial governments, he continues to play an active role in shaping key initiatives. The heritage revival project will focus on restoring at least 115 historical buildings in Lahore, with a particular emphasis on 48 colonial-era structures.
The restoration plan includes the revival of historic gates, landmarks, and residential homes of notable figures like Saadat Hassan Manto and Shorish Kashmiri, as well as the restoration of sites like the Shahi Qila (Lahore Fort), the tombs of Jahangir and Noor Jahan, Shalimar Gardens, and Kamran’s Baradari. Additionally, pedestrian pathways will be created from Shah Alam Market to Bhatti Gate to enhance the city’s cultural experience.
Nawaz Sharif’s involvement in such restoration projects is not entirely new. In the past, he has overseen the renovation of his family homes in Jati Umra and Murree, working with architect Kamran Lashari. Lashari, who was part of the team responsible for similar projects in the inner city of Lahore, will again contribute to the ongoing heritage work.
While some have speculated that Nawaz Sharif might be stepping away from politics, senior members of his party have clarified that he remains actively involved in political affairs. Recently, Nawaz Sharif met with Members of Provincial Assembly (MPAs) from various divisions of Punjab and continues to provide strategic input on national legislative matters. Sources within the party have also indicated that Nawaz Sharif is considering a more prominent role in Pakistan’s political scene and will be actively participating in political activities after Eid.
The launch of this heritage project is seen as an extension of Nawaz Sharif’s longstanding commitment to national infrastructure and cultural preservation, while he also remains deeply engaged in the political landscape of Pakistan.
