MS Dhoni Makes History as Oldest Player to Win IPL ‘Player of the Match’ Award

Lucknow:Chennai Super Kings’ 43-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has made history by becoming the oldest player to win the ‘Player of the Match’ award in Indian Premier League (IPL) history.
On Monday, in an IPL match, Chennai Super Kings defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 5 wickets, securing their second victory of the event. The match was held in Lucknow, where Chennai won the toss and chose to bowl. Lucknow Super Giants managed to score 166 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their 20 overs.
In response, Chennai chased down the target in the final overs, thanks to Dhoni’s quickfire innings. He played an unbeaten knock of 26 runs from 11 balls, including 4 boundaries and a six. Shivam Dube also played a key role, staying not out at 43 runs off 37 balls.
For his outstanding performance with the bat and behind the stumps—where he took 2 stumpings and a run-out—Dhoni was named the ‘Player of the Match’. With this achievement, Dhoni set a new record, becoming the oldest player in IPL history to win this prestigious award.
During the post-match presentation, Dhoni expressed his surprise at receiving the award, saying, “I was wondering why I was being given this award. Noor (Lucknow’s bowler) bowled really well, he deserves it.”
Despite Chennai’s victory, the team is currently at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table, with 2 wins and 5 losses from 7 matches, accumulating 4 points.
