Quetta:The Meteorological Department has predicted increased monsoon rains in July and August for Quetta, yet several drainage channels in the city remain clogged, despite directives from the district administration.
Previously, the provincial government had instructed the Metropolitan Corporation to ensure the cleanliness of all city drains ahead of the monsoon season to prevent flooding and blockages. However, significant obstructions still persist in crucial drainage networks.
Commissioner Quetta and Metropolitan Corporation Administrator Hamza Shafqat stated that Quetta has four types of drainage channels, with 15 rainwater drains under the jurisdiction of the Irrigation Department and one managed by the Department of Transportation and Communications. The responsibility for cleaning 82 drains lies with the Metropolitan Corporation.
They highlighted that, with the assistance of the PDMA (Provincial Disaster Management Authority), the Metropolitan Corporation has successfully cleared drains under its supervision. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Quetta continues efforts to clear encroachments from city drains, achieving 60 to 70 percent completion.
Efforts are ongoing to ensure that all drainage channels are cleared before the onset of heavy monsoon rains to mitigate potential risks to the city’s infrastructure and residents.
