Lawyers’ Community Announces March to Islamabad Against 26th Constitutional Amendment

The lawyers’ community has announced a march towards Islamabad on February 10 in protest against the 26th Constitutional Amendment. The announcement was made during the All Pakistan Lawyers Convention organized by the Lahore High Court Bar.

In a joint statement, the convention called for the immediate cancellation of the Supreme Judicial Council’s meeting, the formation of a full court to hear petitions against the 26th Amendment, and the live broadcasting of the hearings related to the amendment.

The statement further demanded that no new appointments be made until a decision is reached on the 26th Amendment, and that the senior judge of the Islamabad High Court should be appointed as the Chief Justice.

The Lahore High Court Bar also condemned the recently passed PECA (Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act) Amendment.

Lahore High Court Bar President Asad Manzoor Butt expressed full support for journalists’ struggle, while lawyer leader Hamid Khan, addressing the convention, stated that the lawyers’ movement had begun and would carry forward the fight against the 26th Amendment. He also criticized the amendment to the PECA Act as an attack on press freedom, adding that lawyers would stand with journalists on every forum.
