Lahore High Court Judge Recuses Himself from Hearing Election Amendment Act 2024 Case

Islamabad:Justice Sultan Tanveer Ahmad of the Lahore High Court has recused himself from hearing the petition challenging the Election Amendment Act 2024.

During the proceedings, Justice Sultan Tanveer remarked that the current petition pertains to the interpretation of a Supreme Court decision. He stated that he would be hearing cases at the Bahawalpur Bench next week and indicated that this case is of significant importance. The court has decided to forward the case file to the Acting Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court.

The petition was filed by citizen Maniar Ahmad, naming the federal government, the Election Commission, and various political parties as respondents. The petition contends that the Election Amendment Act seeks to nullify specific Supreme Court decisions regarding reserved seats.

The petition argues that the Election Amendment Act 2024 cannot be applied retroactively and requests the court to declare the Act unconstitutional. It also seeks an injunction to prevent the allocation of reserved seats to any political party other than PTI until a final decision is made.
