Lahore Decides to Convert Old Motorcycles into Electric Bikes to Combat Air Pollution

Lahore: In a significant move to reduce air pollution, the Transport Department of Lahore has announced plans to convert old petrol motorcycles into electric bikes. The initiative aims to tackle the city’s increasing pollution levels and promote environmentally friendly transportation options.
Under the new plan, motorcycle owners will be provided with financial assistance from the Transport Department to cover half of the conversion costs. The department has successfully completed a trial conversion of a petrol bike to an electric one, which is currently being tested at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore.
According to the Secretary of Transport, if just half of the motorcycles registered in Punjab are switched to electric, it will significantly reduce air pollution levels in the region.
The conversion process will begin between October and January, with the Transport Department covering 50% of the conversion costs for each motorcycle owner. The initiative is part of the broader Punjab Clean Air Program, which is being developed in collaboration with the World Bank, with funding already allocated for the project.
This effort is expected to play a crucial role in improving air quality and reducing harmful emissions in the city.
