KE Requests for Reduction in Electricity Tariff by Rs. 4.98 per Unit

Karachi:K-Electric has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to reduce the electricity tariff by Rs. 4.98 per unit under the monthly adjustment mechanism. The hearing regarding this request will take place tomorrow.

According to private news channels, electricity is expected to become approximately Rs. 5 per unit cheaper for Karachi consumers. The request has been filed in the context of the monthly adjustment for November. If NEPRA approves this adjustment, Karachi consumers will receive a refund of Rs. 7.17 billion.

In a recent report, a private channel revealed that during former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s tenure, electricity tariffs saw record hikes. It was reported that the overall increase in the electricity tariff, including the surcharges, during the past two and a half years (including the caretaker government period), amounted to Rs. 25.76 per unit – the highest in Pakistan’s history.

During Shehbaz Sharif’s tenure, the basic electricity tariff saw a historic increase of Rs. 22.53 per unit, with an additional surcharge of Rs. 3.23 per unit. As a result, the overall impact on electricity consumers amounted to an additional burden of over Rs. 2,000 billion over two and a half years.

Further hikes were introduced in July 2023 and July 2024, with additional charges and surcharges imposed on consumers. Following these unprecedented increases, the government is now exploring various options to reduce the electricity tariffs, including revising agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and reviewing taxes levied on electricity bills.
