Karakoram Highway Reopens for Winter Traffic for the First Time
Pakistan and China’s vital trade and travel route remains operational year-round due to Frontier Works Organization (FWO) efforts
Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan – In a significant development, the iconic Karakoram Highway, which connects Pakistan and China, will remain open for traffic throughout the year, including the harsh winter months. Traditionally closed from December to March due to heavy snowfall and dangerous conditions, the highway is now operational year-round thanks to the tireless efforts of the Frontier Works Organization (FWO).
The decision to keep the Karakoram Highway open throughout the winter was made by the governments of Pakistan and China in 2024, with the aim of boosting tourism and trade between the two countries. The highway, which passes through some of the world’s most rugged and high-altitude terrain, is now equipped to handle traffic even during severe winter weather.
FWO teams are working round the clock, employing mechanical snow clearance systems and ensuring that the road remains safe for vehicles. Additionally, medical centers and recovery services have been set up at key locations along the route to assist travelers in case of emergencies.
This initiative is expected to have a significant impact on both tourism and trade, with year-round accessibility making the Karakoram Highway an even more vital link between Pakistan and China. The enhanced connectivity will facilitate smoother transportation of goods and allow tourists to explore the region without worrying about seasonal road closures.
