Karachi Faces Water Shortage as Key Supply Line Burst on University Road

Karachi:A major water supply disruption has affected several areas of Karachi following a burst in an 84-inch diameter water line that supplies water from the Dhabeji pumping station. The rupture has caused a halt in water distribution to areas like Gulistan-e-Johar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Bahadurabad, Lines Area, and Lyari, among others.

According to authorities, the damage to the pipeline occurred during excavation work related to the Red Line project. The rupture has resulted in the loss of approximately 150 million gallons of water daily. Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) officials reported that two of the three leaks in the affected pipeline have been repaired, with work on the third ongoing. They assured that water supply would be restored by Wednesday night, and the supply would be fully operational by Thursday.

Tanzeer Sheikh, a senior official at KW&SC, stated that the repair work has been underway for 24 hours, involving over 300 workers and heavy machinery. The process was delayed due to a 16-foot gap created during the drilling operation. However, he confirmed that the repairs on two lines were completed, and the third was progressing quickly. Water supply is expected to be fully restored by Thursday.

In the meantime, authorities have urged residents of the affected areas to use water judiciously to avoid further complications until the repairs are fully completed. The situation has caused significant inconvenience to many Karachiites, but officials are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
