Kamran Akmal Expresses Concerns Over Pakistan Team Selection for ICC Champions Trophy

Former Test wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal has raised serious concerns regarding the selection of Pakistan’s team for the ICC Champions Trophy, stating that the selection committee appears to be in a state of confusion.

In an interview on Geo News’ program *”Score,”* Akmal emphasized that the delayed announcement of the 15-member squad and the surprising inclusion of certain players had raised valid questions. Akmal, who played 268 international matches for Pakistan between 2002 and 2017, stated that while one cannot question anyone’s intentions, if these players were to be included in the Champions Trophy squad, they should have been a part of the team in earlier tours to avoid unnecessary criticism.

He also criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for its decisions, mentioning that while the Pakistan Cup is being held in Karachi, the “Power Hitters” camp is being conducted in Lahore. Akmal questioned the reasoning behind this move, wondering if the Pakistan Cup had no significance given the resources allocated to the camp.

Akmal further pointed out the inconsistency in the board’s approach, questioning how players can be expected to show interest in domestic cricket when they are given NOCs (No Objection Certificates) to play in league cricket, such as the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), during first-class tournaments. This, he argued, discourages players from focusing on domestic cricket.

As the second most successful wicketkeeper in Pakistan’s Test history, with 206 dismissals (184 catches and 22 stumpings), Akmal reflected on the board’s strategy of including former cricketers as mentors in the selection committee and national team management. However, he criticized the overall performance and results of the board, stating that while big names have been gathered, cricketing matters continue to deteriorate under their management.

Additionally, Akmal highlighted the importance of stadium upgrades ahead of the Champions Trophy, suggesting that improved spectator facilities will enhance the experience for fans. He expressed hope that this event would be a significant milestone for Pakistan cricket.

On Pakistan’s prospects in the Champions Trophy, Akmal concluded by stating that, as a Pakistani cricketer, he wishes for the national team to achieve positive and successful results in the tournament.
