Justice Hashim Kakar Warns Against Political Victimization in May 9 Cases: “What if My Name Is Added Tomorrow?

Supreme Court Justice Hashim Khan Kakar delivered strong remarks during a hearing on the May 9 cases, cautioning against potential misuse of legal proceedings for political purposes. “What if tomorrow my name or someone else’s is added to the May 9 cases?” he said, underscoring the need for strict adherence to the law.
The comments came during the hearing of Punjab Government’s appeal against the acquittal of political activist **Sanam Javed** by the Lahore High Court. Questioning the motive behind reopening the case, Justice Kakar asked the government counsel: *”Why do you want to pursue this case now? Did you remember a year later that the accused committed a crime? Injustice cannot be ignored, but the law must guide us.”*
The government’s lawyer argued that the High Court overstepped its authority in acquitting Sanam Javed. However, Justice Kakar firmly responded: *”There is already a precedent—High Courts have full authority in such matters.”*
During the same session, Justice Kakar also addressed the case of veteran politician **Sheikh Rashid**, asking: *”What evidence is there against Sheikh Rashid? Have some fear of God—he has been elected MNA fifty times. He’s an elderly man; where could he possibly flee?”*
Sheikh Rashid’s lawyer criticized the government, stating: *”The government itself asks for delays but then blames the courts and the accused.”*
Justice Kakar reiterated the court’s commitment to justice, stating: *”This court will decide only according to the law, come what may.”*
The remarks have gone viral on social media, with many praising the judiciary for standing firm in the face of political pressure. Others have reignited debate about the fairness of the May 9 cases and the broader implications for civil liberties and legal integrity in Pakistan.
