Quetta:Haji Mir Zabid Ali Reki, central leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) and member of the Provincial Assembly, has emphasized the urgent need for dam construction in Balochistan to address water scarcity and promote agriculture. Speaking about the issues in his constituency, Washuk, Reki highlighted that floodwaters from neighboring Iran and local rains converge in the Hamoon Mashkail area, resulting in water wastage and severed communication with the border area of Mashkail.
Reki pointed out that the water from these floods does not benefit the local agricultural lands but instead flows away, exacerbating water scarcity and unemployment in Balochistan. Many farmers rely on agriculture as their primary source of income, and with vast tracts of land remaining barren due to insufficient water, they are struggling to sustain their livelihoods.
He stressed that while the government may not be able to provide employment to everyone, the construction of dams could transform millions of acres of barren land into fertile agricultural zones. This would enable farmers to cultivate their lands throughout the year, improving their economic conditions.
Reki emphasized that the construction of the Tanak Zorati Dam in Washuk has become crucial. However, he noted that the provincial government may lack the resources to undertake this project and called for federal funding to address the issue. He also mentioned that the Balochistan Assembly has passed a resolution supporting this cause.
He urged the federal government to initiate the construction of dams in Balochistan immediately, including the Tanak Zorati Dam, to provide thousands of families with agricultural opportunities and dignified employment. According to Reki, building the Tanak Zorati Dam would lead to prosperity for farmers and help alleviate unemployment by enabling them to engage in productive agriculture.
