Islamabad: The Judicial Commission is set to convene today at the Supreme Court to deliberate on the appointment of adhoc judges. The session, scheduled for 3 PM, will focus on the cases of Justice (R) Mazhar Alam Khan Mian Khel and Justice (R) Sardar Tariq Masood as adhoc judges, in order to expedite proceedings in pending cases.
The decision regarding the appointment of adhoc judges is crucial in addressing the backlog of cases under trial. Currently, 25% of the pending cases in the Supreme Court are related to military matters. It has been revealed that petitions for hearing in jail-related cases are scheduled for consideration two years after the detainee’s transfer.
On July 10th, under the leadership of Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, a bench was assigned to hear 45 petitions related to jail matters. Among these, 10 appeals were filed by defendants who had fled the country while awaiting justice.
Among the appellants awaiting justice are Mohammad Arif, Mohammad Buta, Saifullah, Falak Sher, Mohammad Ramzan, Abdul Rahman, Muin Akhtar Hussain, Bakhshe Ali, Qasim Mohammad, and Shiraz Butt, whose appeals have been scheduled for hearing after their transfer.
Earlier on May 28th, a bench led by Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail had also been assigned to hear military cases. On that occasion, seven defendants had their jail appeals scheduled for hearing, although they had already fled the country.
The session today underscores the judiciary’s commitment to resolving pending cases promptly, especially those concerning adhoc appointments aimed at expediting legal proceedings.
