Judicial Commission Members Nominated by Parliamentarians and Sent to Supreme Court
Islamabad: Progress has been made regarding the formation of a Judicial Commission for the appointment of judges in the higher judiciary. Names of parliamentarians from the National Assembly and Senate have been sent to the Supreme Court for membership in the Judicial Commission.
Chairman of the Senate, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, under Article 175-A of the Constitution, directed that the nominations for the Judicial Commission from the government and opposition benches include Senator Farooq H. Naek and Senator Shibli Faraz, based on the advice of the Leader of the House Senator Ishaq Dar and the Leader of the Opposition.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, also wrote to the Supreme Judicial Commission to convey the nominations from parliamentary parties. The opposition leader Omar Ayub and Sheikh Aftab from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz were nominated from the National Assembly, while Roshan Khurshid Brohi was nominated for the women’s seat.
According to the spokesperson of the National Assembly, following the approval of the 26th amendment, five members of parliament will be included in the Judicial Commission, ensuring equal representation from both the government and the opposition. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq submitted the nominations after consulting with Chairman of the Senate Yusuf Raza Gilani and all parliamentary parties, with all nominations now received by the Supreme Court.
