Islamic World Prepares for Ramadan 1446 and the Possibility of Two Ramadans in One Year

The Islamic world is currently preparing for the arrival of Ramadan 1446 AH, which, according to astronomical calculations, will begin in most countries on March 1, 2025.

According to a report from Al-Arabiya.net, the moon sighting for Ramadan will take place on Friday, February 28, 2025. The International Astronomical Center has confirmed that the Ramadan crescent will be visible from various locations on Earth.

**Will There Be Two Ramadans in One Year?**

Have you ever thought about the possibility of observing Ramadan twice in a single year? Yes, this will happen in the coming years, particularly in 2030. This rare occurrence happens once every 33 years.

According to both the Gregorian calendar and astronomical calculations, the world will observe two Ramadans in 2030. The first Ramadan will begin on January 4, 2030 (corresponding to 1451 AH), and the second Ramadan will begin on December 26, 2030 (corresponding to 1452 AH).

Thus, in 2030, Muslims around the world will observe 36 fasting days in one year.

**Difference Between the Gregorian and Hijri Calendars**

It is important to note that the Hijri calendar is based on the lunar cycle, where the start of each month is determined by the sighting of the moon. As a result, the total number of days in the Hijri year is either 354 or 355 days, making it shorter than the Gregorian year by about 10 or 12 days.

On the other hand, the Gregorian calendar is based on the Earth’s orbit around the sun, with each year lasting 365 or 366 days. This results in a discrepancy of one year between the Gregorian and Hijri calendars approximately every 33 years.

The last time two Ramadans occurred in a single Gregorian year was in 1997. After 2030, this event will not occur again until 2063.
