Islamabad: The Islamabad High Court has taken action against a social media campaign targeting Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri, issuing notices to Pemra, PTI, and DG FIA in a case of contempt of court. Chief Justice Amir Farooq is overseeing the proceedings in the contempt case related to the social media campaign against Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri.
Justices Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani, Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb, Babar Sattar, Sardar Aijaz Ishaq Khan, Arbab Muhammad Taher, and Justice Samina Rauf Atiq are part of the bench, while Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri is not involved. During the hearing, the court demanded Additional Attorney General Manzoor Dogar and Advocate General’s presence.
Chief Justice Amir Farooq emphasized, “We are not stopping anyone from going anywhere, but no one has the right to run a campaign on social media. What is happening with Pemra, PTI, and FIA? Are they not seeing it?”
The Chief Justice further remarked, “We will not tolerate any campaign against judges. I assure our fellow judges that we will not leave the responsible ones. Lodge a complaint if you must, but enough is enough.”
He added, “We have repeatedly explained that serious campaigns will not be overlooked. Everyone has the right to go to the Supreme Judicial Council if they wish, but we will not ignore serious campaigns against judges. Enough is enough, but we will not forgive those involved.”
Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb said, “Neither the Attorney General nor the Law Minister has said anything. It seems the government is behind this.” Chief Justice Amir Farooq questioned, “Should we inform FIA and Pemra? Is anyone stopping them? To which Prosecutor General replied that the government will act according to the judge’s response.”
The Chief Justice asked, “Will the judge tweet? Do you know what you are saying? It is an institution that speaks. Whoever has heated the situation will spend summers in jail. Will judges also respond? Shall we call a press conference again later?”
Later, Islamabad High Court issued notices to Pemra, PTI, and DG FIA in addition to suspending further hearings in the case involving Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri.
