Indian Scientists Make Significant Progress in Mars Construction Research

A team of scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is making major strides on a project aimed at helping future settlers on other planets. According to Indian media reports, the research team known as ExTeM is developing new ideas and solutions to address the challenges of living in space.
While major space agencies focus on delivering heavy equipment to locations like Mars, the ExTeM team is concentrating on how astronauts can live comfortably once they arrive. One of the team’s projects involves developing concrete for building on Mars without using water, which is a scarce resource on Earth.
Aditya Siddharth, one of the researchers, shared that they have created a special type of concrete using sulfur, which is found on Mars, and it is as strong as the concrete used on Earth. Additionally, the team has developed a high-altitude microgravity drop tower to test how materials behave in zero gravity. This tower helps researchers study how to create special metal foams that can protect Mars buildings from meteorite impacts.
Professor Sathyan Subiya, the project lead, stated that the research is not only crucial for space exploration but also for terrestrial applications. He explained that their goal is to use resources found in space to reduce dependence on supplies from Earth. This innovative approach could be a game-changer for both space exploration and sustainability on Earth.
