Islamabad:In a bizarre turn of events, the Ahmedabad police in India have recovered counterfeit currency worth ₹16 million (approximately $200,000) featuring the image of Bollywood actor Anupam Kher instead of Mahatma Gandhi.
According to Indian media reports, videos of the counterfeit ₹500 notes have gone viral on social media, showcasing Kher’s image prominently. Anupam Kher himself shared a clip of the fake notes, humorously remarking that it was surreal to see his picture on a currency note instead of Gandhi.
The viral video sparked a wave of comments from social media users, with one jokingly stating, “Sir! Your dream has come true,” while another expressed relief that at least someone’s face had changed on the currency.
### The Story Behind the Counterfeit Notes
Reports indicate that the ₹16 million in fake currency was recovered after a scam involving Mehul Thakur, the owner of a company that manufactures silver and gold coins. Thakur reported to the police that he was duped by individuals who had expressed interest in purchasing 2,100 grams of gold.
The alleged buyers instructed Thakur to deliver the gold to a specific location in the Noorungpura area. After dispatching the gold via an employee, the scammers handed over ₹13 million in counterfeit notes in exchange. They then told Thakur’s employees to retrieve the remaining ₹3 million from a nearby shop but never returned.
The incident highlights the ongoing issues with counterfeit currency in India, raising concerns about security and the effectiveness of measures in place to prevent such scams.
