Islamabad:Recent reports from Punjab, Pakistan have revealed a disturbing surge in incidents of violence against women, particularly cases of abduction, rape, and sexual assault. According to data compiled from First Information Reports (FIRs), over 40 separate incidents were reported in Mandi Bahauddin district alone during July this year.
In 2023, a staggering 6,624 cases of rape were registered across the province, highlighting a concerning trend where approximately one woman was raped every 45 minutes. Legal proceedings under various sections, including 376 (rape), 376(3) (rape of minors), and 365B (kidnapping for marriage or illicit relations), underscore the severity and diversity of these crimes.
Most incidents involved young girls and women between the ages of 10 and 28, with a significant number falling between 10 and 18 years old. Police reports indicate that incidents were reported from multiple districts including Lahore and Faisalabad, with Mandi Bahauddin registering the highest number of cases.
Civil society organizations and local authorities have expressed deep concern over the escalating violence and are urging for stricter enforcement of laws to protect women and minors from such heinous crimes. The situation remains fluid as investigations continue into these distressing incidents across the province.
Authorities have initiated measures to address these challenges, but widespread public outrage persists as communities demand swift justice and enhanced safety measures for women across Punjab.
