Imran Khan Ready for Talks with Army, Calls for Dialogue

Islamabad: Former Prime Minister and founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, has expressed readiness for negotiations with the military, stating “We are prepared to engage in talks with the army; let them appoint their representative and we will initiate discussions.” Speaking informally with journalists in court, PTI Chairman urged for dialogue with the military, clarifying that criticisms were not allegations but expressions of concern.
Comparing the army to a misguided child at home, Khan emphasized, “Just as criticism is a hallmark of democracy, we have criticized the army not accused it.” When asked about allegations leveled against the army despite the desire for dialogue, Khan pointed to historical contexts such as the role of General Zia in the execution of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and General Yahya Khan in the fall of Dhaka, arguing, “Should criticism cease if injustices occur?”
On queries regarding political party negotiations, Khan questioned the role of ISI and who Mohsin Naqvi represented. He reiterated trust in Mahmood Khan Achakzai for talks while remaining open to other counterparts. Addressing speculations about internal party trust issues, Khan affirmed full confidence in Achakzai’s capabilities.
Further pressed on whether he would negotiate with Naqvi if authorized, Khan retorted, “I will not engage with Mohsin Naqvi, who unjustly treated our people alongside IG Punjab. He is culpable for Zulfiqar Shah’s death and cannot escape international condemnation.”
In an apparent reference to Maryam Nawaz, Khan labeled her as fascist, claiming she upheld positions due to her father’s embezzlement. Khan underscored key demands for negotiations: return of stolen mandate, release of arrested workers, and ensuring fair elections—a non-negotiable phase in saving the nation.
Regarding the support for Jamaat-e-Islami’s sit-in, Khan assured full participation from PTI and encouraged party leaders to join. He criticized the government’s failure to address the issue of missing persons in Balochistan and expressed solidarity with efforts for their recovery.
Khan’s recent reference to Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court, Aamir Farooq, for reopening cases against him and his wife was noted, questioning the judge’s impartiality. PTI’s statement highlighted the party’s innocence regarding the May 9 incidents, calling for accountability if any member was found involved.
The ongoing political tension between PTI and the government was described as a struggle to survive, with Khan accusing both major parties of conspiring against PTI and engaging in political maneuvering.
In a critical statement against NAB, Khan highlighted its inefficiencies, underscoring his year-long imprisonment due to NAB’s actions, which he attributed to political vendettas. PTI defended Chaudhry Parvez Elahi amidst his health issues, emphasizing his resilience amidst challenging conditions.
