Rawalpindi: In the high-profile case of the May 9 attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has been formally indicted. Additionally, opposition leader and senior PTI leader Omar Ayub was arrested, along with other prominent party figures.
The Special Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) judge, Amjad Ali Shah, conducted the hearing at Adiala Jail, where charges were framed against Imran Khan, Sheikh Rashid, Omar Ayub, Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, and others involved in the attack. The court proceedings were held for the May 9 GHQ attack case, which had sparked widespread protests across the country.
Following the court’s decision, Omar Ayub, the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, was taken into custody, while former Law Minister Raja Basharat was also arrested as soon as he was released from jail. PTI activists, including Azim and Ahmad Chatha, were apprehended as well.
In total, four PTI leaders were arrested by Rawalpindi Police, with all detentions linked to violent protests related to the case. Police have also taken action against individuals involved in the protest movements.
The court has adjourned the case until December 10. The judge has ordered the detention of former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi from Lahore Jail, and issued arrest warrants for several other prominent PTI leaders, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Shibli Faraz, Shireen Mazari, Zartaj Gul, Zain Qureshi, and others. The court has instructed the police to arrest and present all absentees, warning that those who fail to appear will be declared fugitives.
The case, which involves over 120 accused individuals, is part of ongoing efforts to address the violence and unrest following the May 9 attack on military installations and state institutions across Pakistan.
