Karachi, the largest city of Pakistan, is currently reeling under severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures soaring to unprecedented levels. In the past 24 hours alone, authorities have reported the tragic discovery of 19 bodies across various neighborhoods, highlighting the deadly impact of the ongoing heatwave and suffocating humidity.
Among the deceased, six individuals were found in Liaquatabad, underscoring the severity of the heat-related health crisis gripping the city. Officials attribute a significant number of fatalities to drug addiction exacerbated by extreme heat, with bodies being moved to cooling facilities operated by Edhi Foundation and Chhipa Welfare.
Health officials from Sindh province confirmed that 49 cases of heatstroke were recorded in government hospitals on July 17, with fatalities reported at Jinnah Hospital, Civil Hospital, Liaquatabad Government Hospital, and New Karachi Hospital. Additionally, two deaths due to heatstroke were reported separately on the same day.
One victim, identified as 54-year-old Fazal Rahman, hailed from Jahangir Road, while another, 50-year-old Ramesh, was from Ranchhore Line. These deaths underscore the urgent need for public health measures to mitigate the effects of extreme heatwaves in Karachi.
