Global Population to Exceed 8 Billion on January 1, 2025

Islamabad:On the first day of the new year, the world’s population is projected to surpass 8 billion, marking a significant demographic milestone. According to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, the global population grew by approximately 71 million people in 2024, with an increase of 0.9% from the previous year.

### **Global Birth and Death Rates**

The Census Bureau’s report estimates that by January 2025, the global population will reach 8.09 billion. During this period, there will be around **4.2 births** and **2 deaths** per second worldwide. The population increase is driven largely by births and immigration, with varying rates across different countries.

### **Population Growth in the U.S.**

In the United States, the population is expected to grow by over **2.6 million people** in 2024, reaching more than **341 million** by January 2025. According to the Census Bureau, **one birth** and **one death** are expected every **9.5 seconds** in the U.S. Meanwhile, due to immigration, the population in the U.S. will increase by **one person every 23.2 seconds**.

When combining both birth rates and immigration, the U.S. will see an increase of approximately **one person every 21.2 seconds**. Since 2020, the U.S. population has grown by **2.9%**, adding **9.7 million people**. In comparison, the population growth rate between 2010 and 2019 was just **7.4%**, the lowest since the 1930s.

### **Pakistan’s Position in Global Population Rankings**

As of the latest estimates, **India** holds the title of the world’s most populous country, with **China** in second place, followed by the **United States** in third. **Indonesia** ranks fourth, and **Pakistan** stands at **fifth** in terms of population size. Notably, India overtook China in population in 2023, further cementing its position as the world’s most populous nation.

These demographic shifts reflect broader global trends, including longer life expectancies, migration patterns, and shifts in fertility rates, which continue to shape the world’s population growth.
