Chitral: A glacier burst in Upper Chitral has led to severe flash flooding, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, injuries to two others, and the disappearance of one child. Approximately 45 homes have been completely destroyed, with many others suffering partial damage. The flood has also swept away livestock and damaged crops and orchards.
According to reports, the remote village of Surich Turikho in Upper Chitral experienced a loud explosion before the floodwaters surged. Residents moved to safer locations, but about 80% of the area has been affected by the flood. Standing crops, orchards, and numerous livestock have been lost. The bodies of two individuals, including one woman, were recovered by local volunteers and buried. The flood has also injured two people, and a child remains missing.
Emergency response teams, led by the Assistant Commissioner, have been dispatched to the affected area. Rescue 1122 and volunteers from the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat are actively engaged in relief efforts. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Upper Chitral, Shah Adnan, confirmed the deaths of two individuals and the damage to 35 homes.
Recent months have seen an unusual increase in temperatures, leading to glacier melting and subsequent flooding incidents. Previously, two tourists lost their lives when a part of a glacier collapsed due to melting. Authorities have since issued an advisory warning tourists to avoid getting too close to glaciers.
