Former Sunderland Star Asamoah Gyan Left Nearly Bankrupt After Divorce

ACCRA (Qudrat Daily) – Former Sunderland star and Ghana’s national football team captain, Asamoah Gyan, has been left financially strained following a lengthy divorce battle with his wife, Gifty Gyan. After a three-year legal struggle, the 39-year-old Gyan was forced to surrender two properties, two cars, and a petrol station to his ex-wife as part of the divorce settlement.

In addition to the division of assets, Gyan raised doubts about the paternity of his three children, questioning whether they were truly his. However, a DNA test confirmed that he was indeed their father. The court also ordered Gyan to pay a monthly child support amount of 25,000 Ghanaian cedis (approximately £1,729) for the upkeep of his children—Rafael, Frederick, and Floyd.

As part of the court’s ruling, Gyan had to hand over the keys to two properties—one located in the capital city of Accra, Ghana, and the other in the United Kingdom. The court justified the decision by stating that Gifty had made a “non-cash contribution” to the homes, as she had been primarily responsible for the care and upbringing of their three children, two of whom were born before the couple’s marriage in 2013.

Gyan, who previously played for clubs like Rennes and Udinese, as well as stints in Turkey, Dubai, China, and India, had amassed a fortune, which was estimated to be over £18 million earlier this year. His wealth was largely attributed to his successful football career, which included notable achievements such as helping Ghana reach the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. However, Gyan’s career was marred by his infamous missed penalty in the World Cup quarter-finals against Uruguay, following Luis Suárez’s infamous handball.

Despite his past success, Gyan’s financial future now appears uncertain, as he grapples with the fallout from his divorce.
