Former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh Passes Away at 92

New Delhi:Dr. Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India and a key architect of the country’s economic reforms, has passed away at the age of 92 after a prolonged illness. His death was confirmed by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday evening, stating that despite efforts to treat him, he could not be saved.
Dr. Singh, who served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, was known for his calm and intellectual demeanor, as well as his instrumental role in shaping India’s economic policies. Under his leadership, India witnessed significant economic growth, liberalization, and enhanced global standing. He is regarded as one of the key figures in India’s modern economic history.
Born in 1932 in a village near Chakwal (now in Pakistan), Dr. Singh’s family migrated to India after the partition in 1947. He pursued his higher education in economics at prestigious institutions, including Oxford and Cambridge Universities. His academic background and expertise in economics played a central role in his rise to prominence.
Dr. Singh’s tenure as the country’s first Sikh Prime Minister made him a symbol of inclusivity and progress. His time in office is particularly remembered for his role in navigating India through the global financial crisis of 2008 and his continued efforts to push for reforms in various sectors, including trade, infrastructure, and social welfare.
Although his leadership was at times criticized for being passive and overly cautious, Dr. Singh’s contributions to India’s economic and international policy are widely acknowledged. He remains one of the longest-serving Prime Ministers in Indian history, after Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Narendra Modi.
