Federal Power Minister Owais Laghari Proposes Measures to Reduce Electricity Prices
Islamabad:Federal Minister for Power Division Owais Laghari has revealed that during his recent visit to China, he requested Chinese officials to consider restructuring the loans for power plants in Pakistan. If successful, this move could lead to a reduction in electricity prices.
In an interview on Geo News’ program “Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Ke Sath,” Laghari discussed various strategies to lower electricity costs. He mentioned that privatization and improvements in transmission could potentially reduce electricity prices by 2 rupees per unit.
Laghari also pointed out that three CPEC power plants are currently using expensive imported coal to generate electricity. He suggested that if these plants switch to using Thar coal, the cost of electricity could decrease significantly from 23 rupees per unit to 7 rupees per unit.
Additionally, the Minister indicated that the government might reconsider the 18 percent sales tax on electricity for domestic consumers, which could further impact electricity pricing.
