Federal Ministry of Poverty Alleviation Announces Zakat Deductions Criteria for 2025

The Federal Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection has issued the Zakat eligibility criteria for the year 2025. A circular has been sent to banks, outlining the conditions for Zakat deductions from savings accounts.
According to the ministry, if an account balance reaches or exceeds **Rs. 179,689** on the 1st of Ramadan, Zakat will be deducted. However, the deductions will apply only to **savings accounts**, **profit and loss sharing accounts**, and similar types of accounts. **Current accounts** will not be subject to Zakat deductions.
As per the **Zakat and Ushr Ordinance of 1980**, accounts with balances below Rs. 179,689 on the 1st of Ramadan will be exempt from Zakat deductions.
This new guideline will be in effect for the current year’s Ramadan, and account holders are advised to ensure their account balances meet the required criteria to understand whether their accounts will be subject to Zakat deductions.
