Federal Minister Owais Ahmed Khan Laghari Seeks Swedish Green Fund’s Support for Electric Vehicle Conversion in Pakistan

Islamabad: Federal Minister for Power, Owais Ahmed Khan Laghari, has requested technical and financial assistance from Sweden’s Green Fund to convert small vehicles in Pakistan to electric technology. The proposal was made during a meeting with Swedish Ambassador, Alexandra Berg von Linde, with the aim of supporting the recent initiative to reduce the tariff of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Pakistan.
Explaining the proposal, Minister Laghari noted that there are over 30 million motorcycles in Pakistan, particularly within income groups that are in a better position to repay loans. He suggested that the Swedish and European Union Green Funds could consider providing interest-free loans through Pakistani banks to facilitate the conversion of fossil fuel vehicles into electric ones.
Highlighting the importance of renewable energy, Laghari stated that last year, renewable sources contributed to 55% of Pakistan’s total electricity generation. He emphasized the government’s strong commitment to promoting renewable energy and mentioned that the Power Division is formulating policies to provide affordable and sustainable electricity to consumers.
Swedish Ambassador Alexandra Berg von Linde, marking the completion of 75 years of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Sweden, praised the strengthening of bilateral ties. She added that Swedish companies in Pakistan are eager to ensure the supply of reliable green energy and are willing to offer technical cooperation to support Pakistan’s renewable energy goals.
Ambassador Berg von Linde further noted that 70% of Sweden’s energy is derived from renewable sources, demonstrating how economic growth and green energy can go hand in hand seamlessly.
