Federal Government Issues Show-Cause Notice to NEPRA Over Unauthorized Salary Hikes

The federal government has issued a show-cause notice to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) over its unauthorized salary increases. The decision was made during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on the Cabinet Secretariat, chaired by Rana Mahmood-ul-Hassan.
It was revealed that the NEPRA Chairman and board members had increased their salaries by nearly three times. According to sources, salary hikes for government bodies require approval from the federal cabinet, but NEPRA implemented salary increases of up to 20 to 22 lakh rupees without obtaining necessary consent.
Cabinet Secretary Kamran Ali Afzal stated that a clarification had been sought from NEPRA regarding the reasons behind the salary increase. He emphasized that the decision violated Section 8 of the NEPRA Act, and NEPRA must provide a written explanation for the hike.
The Cabinet Secretary also pointed out that all regulatory bodies operate under the supervision of the Prime Minister or the Cabinet.
