Federal Government Establishes ‘DISCO Support Unit’ to Combat Power Theft and Improve Bill Collection

Lahore:In a significant move to curb electricity theft and improve revenue collection, the federal government has established a “DISCO Support Unit” to assist Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO). The unit will comprise officers from various agencies, including the Sector Commander of the Civil Armed Forces (Rangers), ISI, Military Intelligence, and other law enforcement agencies.

According to official documents, the Chief Executive of LESCO, Engineer Shahid Haider, has been appointed as the director of this support unit, while the Sector Commander of the Civil Armed Forces (Rangers) will serve as the co-director. The unit will also include senior officers from the FIA, Military Intelligence, ISI, an SP nominated by the IG Punjab, and an officer nominated by the Commissioner of Lahore.

The terms of reference (TORs) for the DISCO Support Unit focus on accelerating bill recovery, formulating strategies to combat electricity theft, reducing non-technical losses, improving technical solutions to issues, and addressing administrative inefficiencies. The unit will also collaborate with law enforcement and civil administration to resolve issues and remove non-performing LESCO officers and staff based on intelligence-based evidence.

Speaking to the media, Chief Executive of LESCO, Engineer Shahid Haider, confirmed that meetings with Rangers officials have already been held to discuss measures to curb electricity theft and expedite revenue collection. The unit, established for a two-year term, will include senior officers from various agencies to ensure effective oversight and implementation of the objectives.
