Escalating Tensions in Balochistan: Allegations of State Repression and Civil Unrest
Quetta:In the past 48 hours, Balochistan, a province in Pakistan, has been plunged into turmoil amid accusations of severe state repression targeting ethnic Baloch communities. The Baloch Unity Committee has reported incidents of direct firing, tear gas, and violence against convoys heading to a Baloch national gathering in various regions.
In Mastung, eleven individuals sustained severe injuries from direct gunfire, with two in critical condition, while reports of multiple injuries in Talar have surfaced, hindered by an internet blackout. Throughout Balochistan, scores of arrests have been made, leading to allegations of enforced disappearances, along with raids and harassment of civilians, including women and children.
Gwadar and Turbat are under complete blackout and curfew, with mobile and PTCL internet services shut down for two days. Gwadar city is reportedly under siege, with continuous helicopter patrols over Turbat and Gwadar.
The Baloch Unity Committee appeals to international human rights organizations, journalists, and parliamentarians worldwide to take immediate notice of Balochistan’s dire situation and hold the Pakistani state accountable on global platforms. The escalating tensions threaten to deepen the humanitarian crisis in the region.
