Islamabad: Karachi Electric (KE) has prepared to deliver a shock to its consumers in Karachi by seeking an increase of Rs. 5.45 per unit in electricity prices, filing an application with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
There are concerns that consumers in Karachi, particularly in Karachi’s city areas, may face an increase of Rs. 5.45 per unit in electricity prices. KE has submitted this request citing adjustments in fuel prices.
The application requests an increase in monthly Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) for May and June, proposing Rs. 2.53 and Rs. 2.92 per unit respectively. NEPRA is scheduled to hear KE’s request on July 30, and will make a final decision regarding any further increases in electricity prices post hearing.
There is also a possibility of electricity becoming more expensive for consumers of government-run DISCOs, with potential hikes of up to Rs. 2.10 per unit for one month.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency has already filed the request with NEPRA, stating that adjustments in prices are necessary due to monthly fuel cost adjustments.
NEPRA will review the FCA application on July 31 and decide on the proposed increases for DISCO consumers post hearing by the authority.
