Electricity Prices in Pakistan Reach Record High During Shehbaz Sharif’s Government
Islamabad:The cost of electricity in Pakistan has seen a significant rise, reaching record levels under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government.
Sources have revealed that over the past two years, the price of electricity has increased by more than 20 rupees per unit.
According to reports, the basic tariff has risen by a record 22.53 rupees per unit, with an additional constant charge of 3.23 rupees imposed on consumers. This has led to a total increase of 25.76 rupees in just two years and six months.
The increase in electricity prices is unprecedented, with no previous government in Pakistan’s history implementing such a substantial hike. Under Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership, the government has burdened electricity consumers with an additional 2 trillion rupees in charges.
In 2022 and 2023, the basic tariff saw increases of 7.91 rupees and 7.5 rupees per unit, respectively. Additionally, a permanent charge of 3.23 rupees was introduced in July 2023. In 2024, a further rise of 7.12 rupees per unit was recorded in the basic electricity tariff.
This surge in electricity prices has drawn criticism from the public, as many struggle to cope with the ever-increasing cost of living.
