Election Nullification Talks Over Judiciary Concerns: Khawaja Asif
Islamabad: Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has expressed concerns over discussions regarding the nullification of elections under judicial purview. In an interview, Federal Defense Minister Khawaja Asif stated that weightage is given to the issue of government’s termination within the 18-month period mentioned in the Fitch report. Talks of election nullification under judiciary scrutiny are gaining momentum, he added. “If such a situation arises, we will take every possible step to defend our position,” he asserted.
Khawaja Asif further commented that the outcome of the elections has provided us with a space to defend each inch, and we will utilize every available means in this regard. The Fitch report indicates the potential termination of the government within 18 months, which holds significance, he noted. “People are ready to be part of a technocratic government,” he added.
The Defense Minister also speculated that some constitutional meltdown seems imminent. “It might happen sooner than later,” he warned. “Currently, no principle is being upheld; instead, all institutions are being politicized, with the judiciary at the forefront,” he criticized. “At present, the judiciary is the most politically active constitutional body. We have taken a back seat, but our concerns remain,” he remarked.
Khawaja Asif disclosed that a commitment to restrain the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was made before the due time. “Consultation with allies did not take place, which is essential. A consensus decision will be made on this matter,” he assured.
