DG ISPR Asserts Army’s Accountability and Independence Amidst General Faiz Hamid Controversy
Rawalpindi: The Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Choudhry addressed the media today, asserting the Pakistan Army’s commitment to accountability and its strict adherence to non-political principles.
In a press conference, General Choudhry highlighted the Army’s ongoing counter-terrorism efforts, revealing that 32,173 intelligence-based operations have been conducted this year alone. In the past month, nearly 4,000 operations were executed, resulting in the deaths of 90 insurgents. In the Tirah Valley, 37 insurgents were killed and 14 injured. Over the past eight months, 193 courageous officers and soldiers have laid down their lives in the fight against terrorism.
Choudhry emphasized that the Army’s role is to clear and temporarily hold areas affected by terrorism to create a conducive environment for their reconstruction. The responsibility for this reconstruction and the management of these areas falls on provincial and local governments. The Army will continue to support and assist these governments in their efforts.
Addressing the ongoing controversy involving retired Lieutenant General Faiz Hamid, Choudhry stressed that the Army operates under a system of self-accountability and does not engage in political agendas. He underscored that any individual, regardless of rank, who violates the Army’s regulations for personal or political gain, will be held accountable.
The DG ISPR confirmed that General Faiz Hamid’s case, including allegations of exceeding legal and constitutional limits for personal benefits, is a clear demonstration of the Army’s commitment to addressing violations with seriousness and impartiality. Despite his retirement, Hamid faces court-martial proceedings due to evidence of violations of the Army Act.
In response to questions about the appointment of Faiz Hamid as DG ISI and the roles of General Bajwa and General Naveed Mukhtar, Choudhry noted that the DG ISI directly reports to the Prime Minister. He emphasized that any individual involved in violations, regardless of their position, will be subject to legal action.
Regarding the cancellation of a political rally in Islamabad, Choudhry described it as a district-level issue, with security forces focused on their designated responsibilities.
Choudhry also addressed relations with Afghanistan, stating that Pakistan and Afghanistan share strong ties and ongoing communication. He urged that both nations should avoid misunderstandings and remain committed to maintaining their relationship.
