Defense Minister Khawaja Asif Claims General (R) Faiz Hameed’s Involvement in Political Events
Islamabad:Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has alleged that General (R) Faiz Hameed is likely involved in the recent political events in Pakistan, particularly pointing to the incidents of May 9. Asif suggested that Hameed’s actions and involvement in these events align with his known political maneuvering.
In an interview with a private TV channel, Asif asserted that General Faiz Hameed’s influence extended beyond his retirement, indicating that he was deeply involved in political matters. He also mentioned that Hameed had reached out to the leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) with messages and oaths in an attempt to secure the position of Army Chief.
Asif noted that if there was indeed interference in the May 9 events, it would not have been solely Hameed’s doing. He praised the internal accountability system of the army, emphasizing that it is highly effective and decisions are made based on merit.
The Defense Minister highlighted the close relationship between General Bajwa and General Faiz Hameed, noting that both of their fathers-in-law were close associates. He recalled that during Imran Khan’s tenure, General Faiz had promised to support the PML-N in securing both provincial and federal government positions.
Asif also mentioned that during the Army Chief appointment process, Faiz Hameed had contacted the PML-N leadership, making various assurances and appeals. At that time, General Bajwa reportedly suggested that they agree on a third candidate for the position of Army Chief, excluding both Asim Munir and Faiz Hameed.
