Daily Glass of Milk May Help Prevent Colon Cancer: Study

Islamabad:In recent years, there has been a significant rise in cases of digestive system cancers, including those of the intestines, stomach, and other organs, among young individuals. Colon cancer, in particular, is the third most common type of cancer worldwide. However, an everyday item found in almost every household may help reduce the risk of this deadly disease – milk.
Yes, drinking a glass of milk every day could potentially keep colon cancer at bay. A study conducted in the UK by Oxford University suggests that increasing milk consumption can significantly lower the risk of developing colon cancer.
According to experts, 54% of colon cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, avoiding smoking, engaging in physical activity, staying away from ultra-processed foods, and maintaining a nutritious diet. The research involved analyzing the genetic data of over 542,000 women, focusing on tiny changes in their DNA. In the second phase, the researchers gathered information about their diets, including their milk-drinking habits.
By combining both data sets, the researchers were able to estimate the impact of milk consumption on colon cancer risk. The findings revealed that individuals who drank 244 grams (one large glass) of milk daily had a 17% lower risk of developing colon cancer.
Interestingly, the study found that both full-fat and skimmed milk provided protection against cancer, with no significant difference in their effects. The researchers also noted that the protective benefit of milk consumption is separate from other dietary and lifestyle factors. In other words, the reduction in cancer risk is not due to a better overall diet, as even with a less-than-ideal diet, milk consumption still reduced the risk.
While the exact reasons for this protection remain unclear, the researchers shared their insights. They suggested that milk is an excellent source of calcium, which has been previously linked to a lower risk of colon cancer. Additionally, milk contains vitamin D, which is thought to have cancer-fighting properties and helps regulate cell growth and division. Milk also contains a fatty acid that is believed to play a role in fighting cancer.
The study also found that avoiding alcohol and limiting the intake of processed meats can further help in reducing the risk of colon cancer.
These findings were published in the journal *Nature Communications*.
