Dhaka:The government of Bangladesh has extended the curfew until this afternoon to prevent protests and violent demonstrations against the quota system for government jobs, while the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case challenging the quota system today.
According to news agency reports, security personnel continue to patrol the streets of Dhaka following violent protests, which have resulted in the deaths of 133 individuals, including 2 police officers, and injuries to 150 police personnel.
In compliance with government directives, internet, text messaging, and overseas call services have been suspended since Thursday. Educational institutions and offices remain closed.
**Reason for Protests?**
Protests have been ongoing for several days in Bangladesh against the allocation of 30% quota in government jobs for the children of veterans who fought in the 1971 Liberation War. The quota system opponents, primarily students, have clashed with police and ruling party Awami League’s student wing.
In Bangladesh, 56% of government jobs are allocated through quotas, including 30% for children of 1971 war veterans, 10% for women, and 10% for residents of specific districts.
