Couple Exiled from Bajaur for Love Marriage Shot Dead in Karachi
Karachi: A couple, who had been exiled from Bajaur for marrying against family and tribal traditions, was shot dead in Karachi on Thursday. The incident occurred in the Old City area near Meva Shah Mosque in Lyari.
Police identified the victims as Attaullah, son of Pir Mohammad Khan, and his wife Rahadia, also known as Samreen, daughter of Mohammad Gul. The couple was murdered in broad daylight when unidentified gunmen opened fire on them. The male victim, Attaullah, was killed on the spot, while his wife, initially unidentified, was later named as Rahadia.
According to police, Attaullah and Rahadia had been living in Karachi after their love marriage two years ago, which had caused significant conflict with their families. After the marriage, they were forced to leave their native Bajaur Agency due to the tribal jirga’s decision, and they initially moved to Lahore before settling in Karachi. During their time in Karachi, the couple had stayed at a private hotel in Lyari before renting a house near Meva Shah Mosque in the Old City area.
On the day of the murder, the couple had been traveling in a rickshaw from the Clifton Sea View area to Lyari when they were targeted by motorcycle-borne assailants who opened fire on them.
Attaullah’s cousin, Asfandyar, told the police that the couple had been forcibly exiled from their home region by local elders and a tribal council (jirga) due to their love marriage. The police have registered a case based on Asfandyar’s complaint and are continuing their investigation into the shooting.
The bodies of the deceased were handed over to their family members after the completion of legal formalities, and further investigations into the murder are ongoing.
